Eelgrass

Eelgrass is a marine plant found in bays and estuaries and provides benefits and habitat for wildlife, people, and the climate. Some of the benefits of eelgrass:

• Estuarine habitats, like eelgrass beds, absorb wave action and reduce sediment loss during storms.
• Eelgrass purifies water by absorbing pollutants and reducing harmful algal blooms.
• Eelgrass serves as breeding grounds for river critters and was recognized as Essential Fish Habitat by NOAA in 1996.
• Eelgrass stores carbon, helping to combat ocean acidification, which supports shell-forming marine life like oysters.
