Professors in Southern Oregon have discovered a mushroom with true gills, thriving underwater in the clear, cold waters of the Rogue River. Psytherella aquatica has a fibrous stem, brown cap, and plenty of spores carried out by the current.

While studies are still underway, scientists have considered the fungi as a food source for river critters. The question remains as to whether the mushroom could be edible to humans.
