Eelgrass thrive in all of Oregon’s 22 estuaries. They grow in underwater meadows where the freshwater from rivers meets the salty embrace of the Pacific Ocean.

Why is eelgrass so important?

Eelgrass is a marine plant found in bays and estuaries and provides benefits and habitat for wildlife, people, and the climate. Some of the benefits that eelgrass provides are listed below.

  • Eelgrass beds, like other estuarine habitats, absorb wave action and reduce sediment loss during storms.
  • Eelgrass purifies water by absorbing pollutants and reducing harmful algal blooms.
  • Eelgrass serves as breeding grounds for river critters, and it was recognized as an Essential Fish Habitat by NOAA.
  • Eelgrass stores carbon, helping to combat ocean acidification, which supports shell-forming marine life like oysters.

How can I help protect eelgrass?

  • When boating on the shore, make sure to slow down or stop to avoid damaging eelgrass with your propeller.
  • Avoid anchoring over eelgrass beds.
  • Try to recreate in areas that are eelgrass-free zones.
  • Support and volunteer with your local organizations that advocate for eelgrass protection!
