American Dipper

The American Dipper, also known as a Water Ouzel, is unique in being one of the only birds that can swim underwater. They are found in fast-moving streams and rivers, diving into the water in search of aquatic insects. The American Dipper is stunning, with its sleek slate-gray feathers and nictitating eyelids.

Because it relies on clean water for survival, the American Dipper is a great indicator of the overall health of our rivers and streams. Next time you’re out on the water, watch and listen for the high whistles and trills of this magnificent bird!
